Countertop Guide
Butcher Block Countertops
Butcher block countertops are made from strips of solid wood glued into a slab. They bring warmth to kitchens and are a natural fit for islands, cabins and lake homes.
We have strategic partnerships with countertop suppliers and fabricators. Butcher block countertops are available through NLD's countertop partners, and our team can help you compare options and request a quote.
Wood species
Butcher block is commonly made from hardwoods such as maple, oak, walnut and cherry. Lighter species read bright and clean; darker species like walnut add depth. Wood tone shifts over time with light exposure, so compare samples in the room's lighting.
Edge grain vs end grain
Edge-grain tops show the long sides of the boards and are a common choice for countertops. End-grain tops show the ends of the wood fibers in a checkerboard look and are generally considered gentler on knives. Construction affects appearance and upkeep, so ask which constructions are offered for your project.
Oiling and everyday care
Wood needs periodic oiling or a finish to resist moisture. Wipe up water promptly, especially around sinks, clean with mild soap and water, and re-oil when the surface looks dry. Light scratches can generally be sanded out and refinished. Follow the care guidance provided for your specific top.
Where butcher block works
Butcher block is popular on kitchen islands, baking stations, bars and in cabins and lake homes where a warm, rustic surface suits the space. Many kitchens pair a wood island with stone or quartz perimeter counters around the sink and range, where water and heat are most frequent.

Edge grain shows the long sides of the boards in a striped look; end grain shows the ends of the fibers in a checkerboard pattern and is generally considered gentler on knives.
How do I care for a butcher block countertop?
Clean with mild soap and water, wipe up standing water promptly and re-oil periodically when the wood looks dry. See our countertop care guide.
Can butcher block go next to a sink?
It can with diligent care, since wood is sensitive to standing water. Many homeowners use butcher block on an island and stone or quartz around the sink.
Can I pair butcher block with stone countertops?
Yes. A wood island with granite, quartz or quartzite perimeter counters is a common pairing. Compare stone options in our countertop comparison.
