    Common Questions

Carpet & Area Rugs in Kalispell & the Flathead Valley FAQ

We recommend solution-dyed nylon or polyester carpets with stain-resistant treatments for pet owners. Berber and loop styles hide pet hair well, while cut-pile carpets may show more. Look for carpets with built-in moisture barriers and antimicrobial treatments.

Quality carpet typically lasts 10-15 years with proper care. Signs it's time to replace include permanent matting, stubborn stains, odors that won't go away, and worn traffic paths. Regular professional cleaning (every 12-18 months) can extend your carpet's life significantly.

For most residential applications, we recommend 7/16" thick padding with 6-8 lb density. Premium padding improves comfort, extends carpet life, and provides better sound and thermal insulation.

Yes! Modern stain-resistant treatments like Shaw's R2X and solution-dyed fibers offer excellent protection. Solution-dyed carpets have color throughout each fiber, making stains easier to remove.

Absolutely! We can create custom area rugs from nearly any carpet in our showroom. Choose your carpet, specify the size and shape, and select from bound, serged, or fringed edges.

Carpet material in the Flathead Valley typically runs from about $3 per square foot for builder-grade polyester up to $9+ per square foot for wool and premium solution-dyed nylon, plus pad. Northern Lights Design supplies materials only — installation is handled by your contractor. Contact our team for a written materials quote for your project.

No. We are a materials supplier. Our expert team members help you compare fibers, densities, and pads, and we coordinate ordering and delivery; your own installer handles stretch-in or glue-down work on site.

Nylon has the best resilience, so it recovers from foot traffic and furniture crush longer, making it the better pick for stairs, halls, and family rooms. Polyester (PET) is softer underfoot and inherently stain-resistant at a lower price, which suits bedrooms and guest rooms.

Wool is naturally flame-resistant, holds its pile well, and handles dry winter air without the static buildup synthetics can produce. It costs more and needs prompt attention to spills, but in lodges and lake homes it stays attractive for decades.

Choose a dense cut pile or low-profile loop with a tight tuft spacing; long shag and high loops wear at the nose of each tread. Pair it with a firmer 8-pound pad rather than the thickest one available so the carpet does not flex over the edge.

Solution-dyed nylon with a moisture barrier backing resists both staining and odor, since the color runs all the way through each fiber and spills cannot soak into the pad. Loop and textured styles hide hair better than smooth plush.

A great deal. Most residential carpet performs best on 7/16" pad at 6–8 pound density. Too thick or too soft a pad voids many manufacturer warranties and lets the carpet backing flex until it breaks down.

Yes, over a dry slab with a moisture-barrier pad, and synthetic fibers are preferred over wool below grade. If the basement has ever taken on water, consider luxury vinyl plank in the wet zones and carpet only in finished bedrooms.

Every 12 to 18 months for a typical household, and more often with pets or a wood stove. Most warranties actually require documented hot-water-extraction cleaning on that schedule.

Both our Kalispell showroom at 141 Alden Loop and our Lakeside showroom carry full carpet racks and are a short drive from Whitefish, Bigfork, Columbia Falls, Somers, and Polson.

Yes. Nearly any carpet on our racks can be cut and finished as a custom rug with bound, serged, or fringed edges — a common solution for hardwood-floored great rooms. See custom area rugs.

How to choose carpet for a Montana home

Fiber, pile style, and padding matter more than color when it comes to how a carpet looks in five years.

    More details

Here is the framework our showroom team uses with homeowners, builders, and designers across the Flathead Valley.

Carpet fiber: nylon, polyester, wool, and triexta

Fiber choice sets the ceiling on how a carpet performs.

    More details

Solution-dyed nylon has color locked into the filament, so it resists bleaching cleaners and holds texture best in stairs and hallways. Polyester and triexta feel softer and resist water-based stains at a lower price point but crush sooner under heavy traffic. Wool is the natural option — warm, resilient, and the most forgiving underfoot in Montana bedrooms.

Pile style: plush, textured, Berber, and frieze

Cut-pile plush reads formal and shows footprints; textured cut pile hides them and is the workhorse for family homes.

    More details

Berber and level-loop constructions resist crushing and matting, which makes them the usual pick for basements, offices, and rentals. Frieze's tight twist splits the difference — casual, soft, and very good at masking traffic lanes.

    Padding is half the performance

The pad under your carpet controls how it feels and how long it lasts.

    More details

Most residential rooms call for 7/16" thickness at 6–8 lb density; going thicker than the manufacturer allows can void a wear warranty and make seams telegraph. Moisture-barrier pads are worth the upgrade in homes with pets or below-grade rooms, and a firmer, thinner pad belongs under Berber and on stairs.

Carpet for pets, stairs, and Montana mudrooms

Homes with dogs do best with solution-dyed fiber, a moisture barrier pad, and a loop or textured pile that hides hair.

    More details

On stairs, specify a denser, lower pile so the carpet does not grin at the nosing. In snow country, keep carpet out of the first few feet inside the door and transition to tile or LVP where boots land — we help plan those transitions at the showroom.

    Carpet specifications worth comparing

    Compare specifications
    Fiber type
Solution-dyed nylon for durability and bleach resistance; polyester and triexta for softness and value; wool for natural resilience.
    Face weight
Roughly 35–45 oz suits bedrooms; 45 oz and above holds up better in hallways, stairs, and family rooms.
    Twist level
Higher twist counts in cut pile resist untwisting and matting — the single best predictor of how a plush carpet ages.
    Pad thickness & density
7/16" at 6–8 lb density is the residential standard; thinner and firmer under Berber and on stairs.
    Stain treatment
Built-in protection such as Shaw R2X performs best on fresh spills; solution-dyed fiber holds color through repeated cleaning.
    Warranty terms
Stain, soil, wear, and texture-retention coverage differ by mill and are confirmed per style at quote time.
