    Common Questions

White Oak & Hardwood Flooring FAQ

Solid hardwood is 3/4" thick real wood that can be sanded and refinished many times over its lifetime. Engineered hardwood has a real wood top layer over a plywood core, offering better stability for basements, concrete subfloors, and areas with humidity fluctuations. Both options provide authentic beauty and value.

Engineered hardwood is excellent for Montana's climate due to its dimensional stability in varying humidity and temperature conditions. Solid hardwood can work well with proper acclimation and humidity control. We recommend maintaining indoor humidity between 35-55% year-round for optimal performance.

With proper care, hardwood floors can last 100+ years. Solid hardwood can be refinished 4-6 times or more. Engineered hardwood with a thick wear layer (4mm+) can be refinished 2-3 times. Regular maintenance and prompt attention to spills will maximize your floor's lifespan.

Yes, but engineered hardwood is the better choice for radiant heat systems due to its stability. Solid hardwood may experience excessive expansion and contraction. We recommend floating installation methods and specific products rated for radiant heat applications.

Regular sweeping or vacuuming (use the hard floor setting) prevents scratches from dirt and debris. Clean with a slightly damp mop using a pH-neutral hardwood cleaner. Use felt pads under furniture, avoid high heels, and trim pet nails regularly. We provide detailed care guides with every installation.

Price depends on slab grade and origin, edge profile, cutouts, seams, tear-out, and install complexity, so every project is priced at your free in-home measure. Book your free in-home measure.

No. Northern Lights Design is a materials supplier. We help you select species, finish, and grade, order the material, and coordinate delivery to your job site. Your builder or installer handles the installation itself. Our expert team members can walk your plans and quantities with you at either showroom.

White oak and hickory are the most common choices here because their Janka hardness and busy grain hide the grit tracked in from gravel drives and ski boots. Maple reads cleaner but dents sooner, and walnut is best kept to low-traffic rooms. See our engineered hardwood guide for species availability.

Yes. Solid hardwood should never go below grade or directly on concrete. Engineered hardwood’s cross-ply core resists cupping in the humidity swings common in Montana basements, and it can be floated or glued over a slab. Compare formats on our flooring comparison guides.

A 2mm wear layer is serviceable; 3mm to 6mm lets the floor be sanded and refinished two to three times, which matters on a floor you intend to keep for decades. Thicker wear layers also handle sanding out pet scratches without exposing the core.

Yes. Our Kalispell showroom at 141 Alden Loop and our Lakeside showroom both stock full hardwood displays, and both are a short drive from Whitefish, Bigfork, Columbia Falls, and Somers. Take-home samples let you check color under your own light.

Most manufacturers ask for three to five days of acclimation in the conditioned space, with the home held at normal living humidity (roughly 35–55%). In a Montana winter that often means running a humidifier before delivery. Always follow the specific manufacturer instruction sheet that ships with the material.

Engineered hardwood rated for radiant heat is the safe choice. Solid hardwood expands and contracts too much over a heated slab. Keep surface temperature under the manufacturer’s limit (usually 80–85°F) and raise the system temperature gradually at the start of the season.

Factory-applied UV-cured aluminum-oxide urethane resists abrasion best and needs the least upkeep. Hardwax oil finishes look softer and can be spot-repaired without refinishing an entire room, which appeals to owners of cabins and lake homes that see hard seasonal use.

Sweep or vacuum on the hard-floor setting, then damp-mop with a pH-neutral hardwood cleaner. Never wet-mop, steam, or use vinegar or oil soaps. Felt pads under furniture and walk-off mats at every exterior door prevent most of the damage we see. More detail is in our care and maintenance resources.

Yes — material is covered by the manufacturer’s finish and structural warranty, which varies by brand and SKU and is confirmed on your quote. Installation workmanship is warranted by whoever installs the floor. See warranty information for details.

Choosing hardwood flooring for a Montana home

Hardwood is the longest-lived flooring we supply, but the right construction, species, and width depend on your subfloor, your heating system, and how the room gets used.

    More details

Here is how we walk homeowners, builders, and designers through the decision.

Solid vs engineered hardwood in Montana

Solid hardwood is a single piece of 3/4" wood that can be refinished four to six times, making it the long-horizon choice for main levels with stable humidity.

    More details

Engineered hardwood layers a real wood wear surface over a cross-ply core, so it moves far less across the Flathead Valley's dry winters and humid lake summers — and it is the only option we supply for concrete slabs and below-grade rooms.

Species, hardness, and how floors wear

White oak and hickory dominate Montana builds because their Janka hardness and tight grain hide the grit that comes in on boots.

    More details

Maple reads cleaner and more modern but shows dents sooner; walnut is softer still and best in low-traffic rooms. Exotic species such as Brazilian cherry and acacia rate higher on hardness but shift in color as they age.

    Plank width, finish, and texture

Wide plank floors at 5" to 9" create fewer seams and showcase grain, but they need tighter humidity control and a flatter subfloor.

    More details

Wire-brushed and hand-scraped textures disguise everyday scratching in ski-town and lake-house entries, while smooth matte finishes suit formal interiors. Every finish we stock is factory-applied and cured, so there is no on-site sanding or off-gassing.

    Radiant heat and subfloor readiness

Engineered hardwood is the correct specification over hydronic radiant heat; solid plank expands and contracts too much at elevated slab temperatures.

    More details

Whichever construction you choose, planks need to acclimate on site and the subfloor must be dry and flat before your installer begins. We supply the material and the manufacturer's acclimation data — Northern Lights Design does not perform installation.

    Hardwood specifications worth comparing

    Compare specifications
    Wear layer
Engineered hardwood with a 3mm–6mm wear layer can be refinished two to three times; thin 1mm veneers cannot.
    Janka hardness
White oak rates ~1,290 and hickory ~1,820; softer walnut (~1,010) dents more easily under furniture.
    Plank width
3"–4" strip reads traditional and moves least; 7"+ wide plank is contemporary and needs steady indoor humidity.
    Finish type
Aluminum-oxide UV-cured urethane resists abrasion; oil finishes are spot-repairable but need periodic re-oiling.
    Indoor humidity
Manufacturers specify 35–55% relative humidity year-round — critical in Montana's dry winter months.
    Warranty terms
Residential wear warranties vary by line and are confirmed per SKU at quote time.
