    Common Questions

    Luxury Vinyl Plank Flooring FAQ

For high-traffic areas, look for SPC-core luxury vinyl with a wear layer of 20mil or higher (28mil+ for commercial). Rigid-core SPC resists dents from furniture, pet claws, and heavy foot traffic far better than flexible vinyl. Compare options in person at our Kalispell or Lakeside showrooms.

Luxury vinyl is the more practical kitchen choice — it's 100% waterproof, scratch-resistant, and easier to maintain. Hardwood offers unmatched warmth and resale value but requires more care around spills and humidity. See our full flooring comparisons or browse solid hardwood and engineered hardwood to weigh the trade-offs.

All quality SPC and WPC luxury vinyl planks are 100% waterproof at the plank level. For bathrooms, prioritize SPC with tight click-lock seams or glue-down LVT, and pair with a moisture-rated underlayment. Many of our customers also consider bathroom tile or shower tile for wet zones.

Yes — luxury vinyl is one of the most pet-friendly hard surfaces available. Look for SPC construction with a 20mil+ wear layer and a textured/embossed finish that hides minor scuffs. It's also easy to wipe clean after accidents, unlike carpet.

SPC-core luxury vinyl is ideal for basements because it stays dimensionally stable across temperature swings and installs directly over concrete. Pair it with a vapor-barrier underlayment in below-grade spaces. Visit our Columbia Falls warehouse to see basement-rated options.

Northern Lights Design is a specialty materials supplier — we don't perform installation. We carry Shaw alongside TRUCOR, TAS, XL Flooring, South Wind, Raintree, Urban Floor, and Hallmark. Rather than steering you to one brand, our expert team members help you compare wear layers, core construction, and warranties side-by-side. Browse our full lineup on the shop by brand page.

Premium LVP from brands like TRUCOR, Raintree, and Hallmark use registered embossing (EIR) so the surface texture follows the printed grain — creating a wood look that's hard to distinguish from real hardwood flooring. Wider planks (7"+) and matte finishes also boost realism.

LVP is the typical choice for living rooms because plank formats mimic wood and feel warmer underfoot. LVT makes sense if you want a stone or ceramic look without grout maintenance. Both share the same waterproof core technology — see our full comparisons hub for guidance.

Northern Lights Design is a specialty materials supplier — we don't perform installation. Our Montana luxury vinyl selection is available at our showrooms in Lakeside and Kalispell, with delivery from our Columbia Falls warehouse and referrals to vetted independent installers.

Luxury vinyl has a smooth, non-porous surface that doesn't trap dust, pollen, or pet dander the way carpet can. Look for products certified low-VOC (FloorScore or GreenGuard Gold) for the best indoor air quality.

Luxury vinyl wins decisively in humid or moisture-prone spaces — it's 100% waterproof, while laminate's fiberboard core can swell when exposed to water. For Montana lake homes and basements, LVP is the safer choice. See our cabin and lake home flooring guide.

Our pricing is competitive because we source directly from manufacturers and stock inventory at our Columbia Falls warehouse. Trade professionals can also access wholesale pricing through our Sundry Pro Shop.

Yes — click-lock LVP is the most DIY-friendly format. It floats over most subfloors with no glue, and individual planks can be replaced if damaged. We supply the materials and can recommend trusted independent installers if you'd rather not DIY.

Most SPC and WPC luxury vinyl is compatible with radiant heat up to roughly 85°F at the floor surface — always confirm the manufacturer's spec. Glue-down LVT typically performs best over radiant systems because there's no air gap to insulate the heat.

Sample chips and full-size planks can be viewed at both showrooms — Lakeside and Kalispell. To have samples sent, request samples. Samples carry a shipping charge and a deposit; our team confirms the amounts and terms before anything ships.

Porcelain and ceramic tile generally add more long-term resale value in wet areas like bathrooms. Luxury vinyl is more practical for living spaces and basements. For a balanced home, many customers mix both — tile in baths, LVP elsewhere.

All quality LVP is low maintenance — sweep regularly and damp-mop with a pH-neutral cleaner. For maximum durability, choose SPC core with a 22mil+ wear layer and an aluminum-oxide top coat. See our care and maintenance resources.

Most of our premium LVP lines (TRUCOR, Shaw, Hallmark, Raintree) carry lifetime residential warranties. Check our warranty information page for coverage details.

For commercial applications choose SPC with a 28mil+ wear layer, ideally glue-down for maximum stability. Many of our trade customers source commercial LVP through our Sundry Pro Shop.

How to choose luxury vinyl plank for a Montana home

Core construction, wear layer, and installation method decide whether an LVP floor still looks new after a decade of boots, dogs, and lake-house traffic.

    More details

Here is how our showroom team frames the choice.

SPC vs WPC: which rigid core fits the room

SPC (stone plastic composite) uses a dense limestone-based core that barely moves with temperature swings — the right call for sunrooms, lake cabins that go unheated, and basements on slab.

    More details

WPC (wood plastic composite) has a lighter foamed core that feels warmer and quieter underfoot, which many homeowners prefer in bedrooms and second-floor living areas.

Wear layer is the durability number that matters

Wear layer is measured in mils, not millimeters, and it determines how the surface holds up to grit, claws, and chair casters.

    More details

12 mil suits light residential use, 20 mil is the practical standard for families and pets, and 22–30 mil lines carry light-commercial ratings for rentals, offices, and short-term stays.

Click-lock, glue-down, and loose lay installation

Click-lock floats over most flat subfloors and is the most common residential method.

    More details

Glue-down is the most dimensionally stable choice for large open runs, heavy rolling loads, and radiant slabs. Loose lay relies on friction and a heavy back, which makes it easy to lift for rentals. We supply the material and the manufacturer's substrate requirements; Northern Lights Design does not perform installation.

Waterproof, radiant heat, and Montana temperature swings

A waterproof core protects the plank, but the assembly is only as good as its perimeter expansion gap and the seal at showers and exterior doors.

    More details

Most SPC and WPC lines are rated for radiant systems up to roughly 85°F at the floor surface. In cabins that sit cold all winter, choose SPC and follow the manufacturer's acclimation window before the boxes are opened.

    LVP specifications worth comparing

    Attached underlayment
IXPE or cork pads add sound control — check whether a separate underlayment is allowed by the warranty.

Wider, longer planks with painted micro-bevels read closest to real wood in open floor plans.

    Best for Kitchens

    Luxury Vinyl Plank

Waterproof core handles spills, dishwasher leaks, and pet bowls without warping — and stands up to dropped cookware better than solid wood or laminate.

    Best for Bathrooms

    Luxury Vinyl Plank (SPC)

100% waterproof and dimensionally stable in humid environments. Hardwood is not recommended for full baths; laminate's fiberboard core risks swelling at seams.

    Best for Basements

    Luxury Vinyl Plank (SPC)

Below-grade moisture and temperature swings demand a rigid, waterproof core. Solid hardwood is incompatible with concrete subfloors; laminate is moisture-sensitive.
