Countertop Guide

    Soapstone Countertops

Soapstone is a natural stone with a soft, matte feel and grey to charcoal tones that darken and develop a patina with use. It suits farmhouse, cabin and mountain-modern kitchens.

We have strategic partnerships with countertop suppliers and fabricators. Soapstone countertops are available through NLD's countertop partners, and our team can help you compare options and request a quote.

    What soapstone is

Soapstone is a metamorphic stone rich in talc, which gives it a smooth, slightly soft feel. Colors generally range from light grey to deep charcoal, often with lighter veining. As a natural stone, each slab varies.

    Patina and oiling

Soapstone darkens over time with use, and many owners apply mineral oil to even out that darkening and deepen the color. Oiling is a cosmetic choice rather than a sealing requirement. Follow the care guidance provided for your specific stone.

    Heat resistance and softness

Soapstone is generally known for tolerating heat well. It is softer than granite or quartz, so it can scratch and dent; many owners accept these marks as part of the stone's character, and light scratches can often be sanded or oiled out.

    Soapstone in mountain homes

The muted tones and matte surface pair naturally with wood, iron and stone found in cabins, lake homes and mountain-modern interiors. Compare samples against your cabinetry and flooring at our Kalispell or Lakeside showroom.
