What lippage is and why it matters

Lippage is the height difference between the edges of adjacent tiles. A little is normal because tile itself isn't perfectly flat, but too much looks sloppy, shows under raking light and can become a trip point.

How a tile leveling system works

Every system has two parts: a base that slides under the edges of neighboring tiles while they're set in fresh thinset, and a top piece that presses the tile faces into the same plane. Once the mortar cures, you snap off the exposed part of the base and remove the top.

Clip-and-wedge systems (tile leveling clips and wedges)

A clip (sometimes called a leveling spacer) goes under the tile edges, and a wedge slides through the clip's slot to push the tiles flush. Clips and wedges are fast to install on open floor areas and easy to check at a glance. Bihui B-RIGID is a clip-and-wedge style system.

Spin-cap systems

A threaded post or base sits under the tile edges and a cap spins down onto the tile surface. Spin-cap systems such as Spin Doctor give fine control of pressure, which many installers like on large-format and thin porcelain. Protection pads sit under the cap to guard the tile face.

Do tile leveling systems work?

Yes, for what they're designed to do: keep edges flush during cure. They are not a substitute for a flat substrate and are not meant to level a floor. If the floor has dips or humps, fix it first with a self-leveling compound, then use the leveling system to manage tile-to-tile lippage.

Large-format tile and leveling systems

Larger tiles have longer edges, more potential warpage and less room for error, so leveling systems are common on large-format porcelain floors and walls. Which is the best tile leveling system?

The best system is the one that fits your tile and your workflow:

  • Bihui B-RIGID if you want a straightforward clip-and-wedge setup for open floors.
  • Spin Doctor if you want spin-down caps with fine pressure control, especially on large or thin tile.

Tile Leveling System FAQ

Yes. It keeps adjacent tile edges flush while thinset cures. It won't fix an out-of-flat floor, so level the substrate first.

Clip-and-wedge systems push tiles flush with a wedge through a clip. Spin-cap systems use a cap that twists down on a threaded base. Both leave a breakaway base in the joint that you snap off after cure.

The base that sits under the tile is generally single-use because it's snapped off after cure. Tops such as caps may be reusable depending on the system. Check the manufacturer's instructions.
