Quartzite Countertops: Why They're Taking Over Montana Mountain Homes

Harder than granite, more natural than quartz — quartzite is the countertop of the moment in Whitefish, Bigfork, and Lakeside. Here's what to know before buying.

Quartzite Countertops: Why They're Taking Over Montana Mountain Homes

Walk into almost any new build in Whitefish, Bigfork, or the Lakeside hills right now and you'll see the same material on the kitchen island: quartzite. It looks like marble, performs like granite, and fits the natural-material aesthetic that defines Montana mountain design.

    Quartzite Is Not Quartz

This is the single most common point of confusion in our showroom:

    • Quartz is engineered — roughly 90% ground stone bound with resin, manufactured in slabs
    • Quartzite is 100% natural stone, formed when sandstone is metamorphosed under heat and pressure

They're completely different products. Quartzite is closer to granite in how it's mined, finished, and maintained.

Why It Works for Mountain Homes

    • Veining that mimics marble without marble's softness
    • Cool-tone palettes (whites, soft grays, taupe with charcoal veining) that pair beautifully with rustic wood and stone
    • Heat resistance that handles cast iron straight off the stove
    • Hardness that resists the chips and dings of a busy mountain-home kitchen

    What to Watch For

Not all "quartzite" sold in showrooms is true quartzite. Some softer dolomitic stones are marketed as quartzite but behave more like marble. We test slabs in person and only carry the real thing.

    Other things to check:

    • Resin treatment: Most slabs are resin-stabilized at the factory — this is normal and improves performance
    • Sealing: Quartzite needs to be sealed at install and re-sealed every 1–3 years depending on use
    • Edge profile: Eased, mitered, and full bullnose all work; ogee and complex profiles are harder on softer slabs

    Popular Slabs Right Now

    We're moving a lot of:

    • Taj Mahal — warm cream with subtle gold veining
    • Mont Blanc — bright white with gray veining
    • Sea Pearl — green-gray with dramatic linear movement
    • Cristallo — translucent, often backlit on islands

Bring Your Cabinet & Floor Samples

Quartzite is a statement material — pick the slab in person, with your cabinet door, hardware, and flooring samples in hand. Slabs vary dramatically; the one in the showroom is the one you're getting.
