Godfrey Hirst
Wool and performance-fiber carpet with 160 years of manufacturing history
Godfrey Hirst traces its manufacturing history to 1865 in Geelong, Australia, and is best known in North America for wool carpet alongside SmartStrand and EverLux nylon programs. If wool is on your short list, this is usually the first line we pull.

Montana climate & project considerations
- Wool moderates the winter static that bare-slab and forced-air Montana homes are notorious for.
- Wool is more sensitive to certain spot cleaners — plan the maintenance products at the same time you plan the carpet.
- For a walk-out lower level that sees wet boots, we'd usually put nylon in the traffic lane and save wool for the bedrooms.

Godfrey Hirst FAQs
Is wool carpet practical in Montana?+
In bedrooms and primary suites, usually yes — wool handles dry-winter static well and wears gracefully. In mud-and-snow traffic lanes we typically recommend a nylon or SmartStrand style instead.
Can Northern Lights Design order Godfrey Hirst?+

Does Godfrey Hirst offer SmartStrand?+
Godfrey Hirst's North American range includes SmartStrand and SmartStrand Silk styles alongside its wool and EverLux nylon collections. We'll compare the specific styles rather than the fiber name alone.
How is wool cleaned?+
Follow the manufacturer's published care guidance — wool has different chemistry limits than synthetics. We'll give you the current care document with your order.
