    Common Questions

    Engineered Hardwood FAQ

Engineered hardwood is the better choice for most Flathead Valley homes. Montana's dry winters and wetter summers cause humidity swings that make solid hardwood expand, contract, and gap. Engineered planks have a plywood core that's dimensionally stable, so they handle the swings without cupping. They're also the only hardwood option for installation over concrete or radiant heat.

Yes — specific engineered hardwood is approved for use over hydronic and electric radiant heat. We carry several radiant-rated lines from Kährs, Anderson Tuftex, and others. Solid hardwood is generally NOT recommended over radiant heat due to thermal cycling. For tile pairings on radiant slabs, see our tile and stone collections.

Premium engineered hardwood has a 3–6 mm sawn-face wear layer and can typically be sanded and refinished 1–3 times — similar to solid hardwood. Budget engineered floors have a thinner 0.5–2 mm veneer and usually cannot be refinished. Our flooring warranty page details long-term coverage by line.

Hardwood material pricing depends on species, solid or engineered construction, grade, finish, and quantity. Northern Lights Design supplies materials; your independent installer quotes preparation and installation separately. Book your free in-home measure. Yes — this is one of the biggest advantages of engineered. Solid hardwood cannot be installed below grade or directly over concrete, but engineered hardwood can be floated, glued, or stapled over a moisture-controlled concrete slab. We supply the right underlayment and vapor barrier for your specific install.

For busy households with kids and pets, look for hickory (Janka 1820), white oak (1360), or rift-and-quartered oak with a 4mm+ sawn-face wear layer. Wire-brushed and reactive/smoked finishes hide micro-scratches far better than smooth high-gloss. For the toughest-wear rooms (mudrooms, kitchens with pets), compare with waterproof luxury vinyl plank as an alternative.

In-stock domestic engineered runs 1–3 weeks. Custom-width European white oak, special stains, and reactive/fumed finishes typically run 8–16 weeks from order to delivery at our Columbia Falls warehouse. We coordinate timing with your contractor's schedule and can source most-requested wide-plank SKUs through our Columbia Falls warehouse.

Engineered hardwood is available in UV-cured aluminum-oxide (most scratch-resistant), natural hard-wax oils (Rubio Monocoat, Pallmann Magic Oil — easier to spot-repair), and traditional polyurethane. Sheens span ultra-matte, matte, satin, and semi-gloss. Surface textures include smooth, wire-brushed, hand-scraped, sawn-face, and smoked/reactive. Stop by Lakeside or Kalispell to compare samples side-by-side, and see our care guides for finish-specific maintenance.

Yes. We stock FSC-certified European oak, formaldehyde-free (CARB Phase 2 / NAF) engineered cores, and GREENGUARD Gold-certified prefinished lines. For finishes, our natural hard-wax oils are low-VOC and well-suited for allergy-sensitive households. Ask our team for the current eco-certified product list, or compare with our low-VOC carpet options.

Northern Lights Design is a specialty materials supplier — we don't perform installation. We help you select the right engineered hardwood, coordinate delivery from our Columbia Falls warehouse, and refer vetted independent installation contractors across Kalispell, Whitefish, Bigfork, and Lakeside who are experienced with the specific line you've chosen. Your quote from us covers materials and accessories; your independent installer provides a separate labor quote.
