Tile & Stone Guide
Wood-Look Porcelain Tile
Wood-look porcelain tile is porcelain printed and textured to look like wood planks. It gives you a wood-grain floor with porcelain's water resistance and durability, which makes it a common pick for mudrooms, bathrooms and lake homes.
We supply porcelain from brands including Porcelanosa, Daltile, Bedrosians and MSI.
Where wood-look porcelain works
- Mudrooms and entries that see snow, grit and wet boots.
- Bathrooms and laundry rooms where you want a wood look near water.
- Basements and lake homes where moisture is a concern.
- Over radiant heat, where tile is a common pairing; follow the manufacturer's guidance.
Layout and grout tips
General considerations; your installer and the manufacturer's instructions govern the installation.
- Long planks are often laid with a limited offset to reduce lippage; follow the manufacturer's recommended offset.
- A grout color close to the tile helps the planks read like a continuous wood floor.
- Pull from several boxes to blend grain variation.
- Use the tile calculator to estimate area and boxes, then confirm quantities with your installer.
Wood-look porcelain vs LVP and hardwood
Porcelain is the hardest and most water-resistant of the three but feels cooler and firmer underfoot. LVP is warmer and softer and also handles water. Hardwood is the real material and can be refinished but is not suited to wet areas.
Wood-Look Porcelain Tile FAQ
Is wood-look porcelain tile waterproof?
Porcelain itself is unaffected by water, which is why it suits bathrooms and mudrooms. Grout and the installation beneath it also matter in wet areas.
Does wood-look tile feel cold?
Tile feels cooler than wood or LVP. Many homeowners pair it with radiant heat or area rugs.
Is wood-look porcelain better than LVP?
It is harder and more water resistant, while LVP is warmer and softer. Compare both in our vinyl vs tile guide.
How do I estimate how much tile I need?
Use our tile calculator for area and boxes, then confirm quantities and overage with your installer.
