Flooring Guide
Waterproof Flooring
The most common waterproof flooring choices are luxury vinyl plank (LVP) and porcelain tile. Both resist water at the surface, but "waterproof" describes the flooring material itself, not the subfloor, walls or a flood.

Waterproof flooring options
- Luxury vinyl plank and tile (LVP/LVT): a vinyl or rigid core that water does not swell; warmer and softer underfoot than tile.
- Porcelain tile: dense, low-absorption tile that is unaffected by water; grout and setting materials matter for wet areas.
- Natural stone: works in wet areas when the stone and sealing are suited to the location.
- Sealed concrete and other surfaces exist, but most of our clients compare LVP and porcelain.
Mudrooms, basements and lake homes
- Mudrooms: wet boots, snow and grit favor porcelain tile or LVP with a durable wear layer.
- Basements: concrete slabs and possible moisture favor LVP or porcelain; ask the manufacturer about moisture testing and vapor requirements.
- Lake homes and cabins: wet swimsuits, sand and seasonal temperature swings; check each product's requirements for unheated homes.
What "waterproof" does and does not cover
A waterproof floor resists spills and surface water. It does not stop water from going underneath through seams, edges or transitions, and it does not fix moisture coming up from a slab or a plumbing leak. Warranty terms vary by manufacturer, so read what each product's warranty covers before you choose, and follow the installation requirements.
Waterproof Flooring FAQ
What is the most waterproof flooring?
Porcelain tile and luxury vinyl are the most common waterproof choices. Porcelain is unaffected by water; LVP has a core that water does not swell.
Is waterproof LVP really waterproof?
The planks resist water, but water can still reach the subfloor through seams or edges. Check the manufacturer's warranty for what is covered.
What flooring is best for a basement?
LVP and porcelain tile are common basement choices. Follow the manufacturer's moisture-testing and installation requirements for concrete slabs.
What flooring works in a mudroom?
Porcelain tile or durable LVP handle wet boots and grit well. See tile & stone and luxury vinyl.
