Tile Guide
Large Format Tile
Large format tile generally means tiles with at least one side of 15 inches or more, including popular 24x24, 24x48 and larger porcelain panels. Fewer grout lines make floors and walls look calmer and more open.
We carry large-format porcelain from brands including Daltile, Emser and Florida Tile, plus Schluter leveling and edge systems.
Where large format tile works
- Open living areas and kitchens, where fewer grout lines look seamless.
- Shower walls and backsplashes.
- Curbless showers with a linear drain.
- Entries and mudrooms in durable porcelain.
The substrate has to be flat
Big tiles show unevenness as lippage, where one tile edge sits higher than the next. Large format tile needs a flatter floor or wall than small tile, and many installs use self-leveling compound and a tile leveling system.
Setting materials and layout
Large tiles generally call for mortars made for large and heavy tile and full coverage under the tile. Offset patterns are often limited to a third rather than half to reduce lippage from tile bow. Follow the tile and mortar manufacturers' instructions.
Handling and ordering
Large panels are heavy and can need two people or special tools. Order enough for cuts and breakage; our calculators help with a starting quantity. We work with any installer you choose, and we're happy to recommend installers we know.
