Tile Guide
Shower Floor Tile
A shower floor has to slope to the drain, stay slip resistant when wet and handle constant water. That is why tile choice for the floor is different from the walls.
We supply shower tile from brands including Daltile and Bedrosians, plus Schluter waterproofing and drain systems. The photos below are from real projects.

Why small tiles are common on shower floors
Small mosaics bend with the slope toward a center drain, and the extra grout lines add grip underfoot. Hexagon, penny round, square and pebble mosaics are common choices.
Large-format tile with a linear drain
A linear drain lets the floor slope in one direction, which makes larger tiles workable and gives a cleaner, more modern look. Confirm with your installer that the tile size, flatness and drain system work together.
Slip resistance
Look for tiles the manufacturer rates for wet floor areas, and check the product's slip-resistance data. Matte, textured and honed finishes generally grip better than polished ones.
Shower floor tile ideas
- Match the floor and walls in one color with a smaller floor mosaic.
- Use a contrasting pebble or hex floor under plain wall tile.
- Carry wood-look or stone-look porcelain from the bathroom into a curbless shower with a linear drain.
- Pick a darker grout for the floor to hide wear.
Waterproofing underneath
The tile is only the surface; the waterproofing underneath keeps water out of the structure. We carry Schluter systems for shower floors, drains and niches. We work with any installer you choose, and we're happy to recommend installers we know.
Shower Floor Tile FAQ
What is the best tile for a shower floor?
Small mosaics in porcelain or natural stone are common because they follow the slope and add grip. Choose tile the manufacturer rates for wet floors.
Can I use large tiles on a shower floor?
Often yes, with a linear drain and a single-direction slope. Confirm the tile and drain system with your installer.
Is pebble tile good for a shower floor?
Pebble tile adds texture and grip. It has many grout joints, so ask about grout and sealing for the specific product.
What grout works best on a shower floor?
Many installers choose epoxy or high-performance grout for showers. See our grout and setting material guides.
Do you sell shower waterproofing?
Yes. We carry Schluter waterproofing, drains and niches. See shower tile and waterproofing.
