Tile & Stone Guide

    Zellige Tile

Zellige is a traditional Moroccan glazed tile, hand-formed from clay. Its uneven surfaces, edges and glaze depth are part of its character, which is why a zellige wall reflects light with so much movement.

We supply handmade and zellige-look tile, including the Bedrosians Cloé hand-pressed ceramic line with zellige-inspired colors, with samples at both showrooms.

    Handmade variation: what to expect

    • Tiles vary in size, thickness, color and glaze within the same batch.
    • Edges may be chipped or irregular, and surfaces may show pits or crazing; these are characteristics, not defects.
    • Pulling from several boxes during installation blends variation across the wall.
    • Zellige-look ceramics, such as hand-pressed lines, offer a similar feel with more consistency.

    Where zellige works

    • Backsplashes: a classic use, where the glaze catches light from windows and under-cabinet lighting.
    • Shower walls: suitable on walls when the product is rated for wet areas and installed over a proper waterproofing system.
    • Fireplace surrounds: adds texture to a feature wall; confirm the product's suitability for the location.
    • Floors: handmade zellige is generally a wall tile; check the manufacturer's rating before using any tile on a floor.

    Installation and grout considerations

These are general considerations; your installer and the manufacturer's instructions govern the actual installation. Northern Lights Design supplies materials and does not install.

    • Order extra tile to allow for sorting and variation; your installer can advise the overage.
    • Zellige is often set with tight joints, and grout choice changes the look: matching grout softens, contrasting grout highlights the edges.
    • Some handmade glazes and unglazed edges call for sealing before grouting; follow the product's guidance.
    • Use setting materials suited to the tile and the location; our pro supplies counter can help match them.
